The Meaning!!!

Meaning of Symbol: The symbol is to create awareness about the melting ice-cap that might cause flood to the world.

Meaning of Shape:
Ying Yang Shape is to use to show the balance between the water level and land.
The Fire with the round shape will show the sun that to portrait the idea of Global Warming. Together with the iceberg, it show that the melting ice cap one of the effect of Global Warming.
The wave between the iceberg and the city is to show that the wave that is breaking the balance border.

Meaning of Color:
Red is to represent the hot weather that cause the ice to melt. Besides that, it also shows power. The power that able to break the balance.
Purple show strong cool and strong warm effect that represent by the border of two different balances.
Blue show clam. Which suitable to represent people in city that is unaware of the happening.
Orange show energy and warmth. This color can represent the sun that have the energy to melt the ice and it is warmth.

Meaning of Symbol:
The symbol represent the people that is unaware of the danger that melting ice cap as one of the Global warming effect.

Metaphor:
City to represent the people who live on land.
Iceberg to represent the Ice cap of arctic.

Relation to the Global Warming
As global warming have been long time issue but people are still unaware of the danger it might bring. This symbol is meant to give awareness to the people the danger that one of the effect, Melting ice cap, that might bring.

The Process

From hand drawing to illustrator in computer, I scan the sketch that I drew into digital form. In Adobe Illustrator, I import the file and use it as a template for my tracing of the line. After that, I show Ruler and grid before I start my work.

Then, I create a new layer with the name of Ying Yang. I start drawing with a Ellipse Tool by pressing the Shift and Alt button from the centre the circle of my sketch. After that, I trace a straight line with pen tool. With the straight line, I used free Convert Anchor Point tool to make a curve line.

At this process I create a another new layer with the name of wave. I also start tracing the line with pen tool and also used the Convert Anchor Point tool to make all the curve line.

With the wave done. I move on to another new layer. That is the Iceberg. With the same matter I trace the line with pen tool and transform the line to curve line to create the iceberg.

Since the above part done, I also have to create new layer with the name city. With the same method I trace the line with the pen tool and make curve line for the land that support the city.

To create the spike, I start off by creating a new layer with the name of temporary. In that layer I draw another circle with the help f ellipse tool. With the same matter by pressing the shift and alt, I create the circle from the middle but the circle a lightly bigger than before. After that I create another layer call spike. On this layer, I trace the spike of my sketch with a pen tool and make curve line with free Convert Anchor Point tool. With the first spike done, I drap the layer of the spike to create a new layer for 5 times. Then, with that i get 5 same spike. I rotate each 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 and match it to the circle that I create before.

With all the tracing done, I group each of the layer one by one and fill in the colour with Live Paint Bucket Tool. Each color is pick from colour swatch and rename to which layer that I apply.

Apply color

After, I finlaise my sketch. I decided to move on with applying the colour on to the sketch. Through my research on the net I manage put all the color together just as the picture beside.

Sketch

Being given the task of designing the symbol by the lecturer, it been fun but yet challenging as the symbol must contain a meaning toward the topic of global warming. Therefore, I start off with the topic of Deforestation but end up with stuck of idea. Then, I move on to the others topic of melting ice cap and find it quite a nice topic to illustrated a few idea. Firstly, I sketch out the melting ice to give the idea of melting ice. Then, the wave to refer to the melting of the ice that create wave. Next, sketch of the building of where human live. After that, the main sketch is the Ice cap. As the melting ice cap create an unbalance to the earth. So, I decide to insert the Ying Yang to indicated the balance between the land and the sea of earth. Combining all the elements. It became a symbol of the Ice cap above the balance of Ying Yang while the city below which is under the ice cap as the treat by the wave of the sea. Beside that, since it is about global warming. So, I also insert the design of the sun to show the hot weather. So, end up a sketch of the symbol of the below(Upload Image).

Example of Picture for my symbol

These are the picture that I used to make reference for my symbol:

The Ying Yang balance make a symbol of balance.

Melting ice

The city that represent living human.

The Wave of water shall represent the rise of water.

About Global warming

Global Warming

The term Global Warming refers to the observation that the atmosphere near the Earth's surface is warming. This warming is one of many kinds of climate change that the Earth has gone through in the past and will continue to go through in the future. It is reasonable to expect that the Earth should warm as the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increases. It is known for certain that atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases are rising dramatically due to human activity. It is less well known exactly how the increases in these greenhouse gases factor in the observed changes of the Earth's climate and global temperatures.

Glacier Retreat

The retreat of glaciers since 1850, worldwide and rapid, affects the availability of fresh water for irrigation and domestic use, mountain recreation, animals and plants that depend on glacier-melt, and in the longer term, the level of the oceans. Studied by glaciologists, the temporal coincidence of glacier retreat with the measured increase of atmospheric greenhouse gases is often cited as an evidentiary underpinning of anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming. Mid-latitude mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, Alps, Rocky Mountains, Cascade Range, and the southern Andes, as well as isolated tropical summits such as Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, are showing some of the largest proportionate glacial loss.(IPCC)(Mölg)
The Little Ice Age was a period from about 1550 to 1850 when the world experienced relatively cooler temperatures compared to the present. Subsequently, until about 1940, glaciers around the world retreated as the climate warmed. Glacial retreat slowed and even reversed, in many cases, between 1950 and 1980 as a slight global cooling occurred. However, since 1980 a significant global warming has led to glacier retreat becoming increasingly rapid and ubiquitous, so much so that some glaciers have disappeared altogether, and the existence of a great number of the remaining glaciers of the world is threatened. In locations such as the Andes of South America and Himalayas in Asia, the demise of glaciers in these regions will have potential impact on water supplies. The retreat of mountain glaciers, notably in western North America, Asia, the Alps, Indonesia and Africa, and tropical and subtropical regions of South America, has been used to provide qualitative evidence for the rise in global temperatures since the late 19th century.(IPCC2) (NSIDC) The recent substantial retreat and an acceleration of the rate of retreat since 1995 of a number of key outlet glaciers of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, may foreshadow a rise in sea level, having a potentially dramatic effect on coastal regions worldwide.

All about me...

Hi....I am Pek Tze Wei. I came from Sarawak. I live at a city call Miri. Well, I quite miss my hometown. Although, it is not really a big city, it is where all my sweet memory happen to be. I am 21 year old this year(2008). Been studying on Automotive Engineering for the pass 3 year and going to gain my diploma level cert at this July. Currently studying in FCM at Alpha level. My hobby is Photography. Been loving it since secondary school as one of the photographer for my school. Since those time the I study and do a lot of research about photography. I even get the chance to work to take photography of Wedding Ceremony. Those are really my practice field. Manage to get to learn a lot of skill. I am willing to share my experience with those who is interest or even forming a photography group. That is basically about me.
